Why ottoman?

When I first learned the word “ottoman” three and a half years ago, I had this question in my mind: why would someone spend over two or three hundred dollars to get an ottoman? An ottoman is not as self-explanatory as a sofa or a chair which has a definite and obvious function. As much as I was confused, ottomans are one of the most popular furniture categories in our company.

Little did I expect that I would purchase two ottomans for my own living room later. One day this cute ottoman showed up in our showroom and everybody in the company was excited because it came in multiple sample colors that we never had before. The colors were so lively that, as weird as it sounds, everybody in the company had an impulse purchase of ottoman that day, including me. Well, I can use it as extra seating when friends come over, that is what I thought.

When I got them home though, my husband opened them immediately, put them in front of the sofa, laid his feet on them, and made a comfortable noise. Oh, this makes our sofa so much more comfortable, that is what he said, and so did many of my friends when they came over.
I told this story to another friend the other day, surprised to find that the exact same story happened to him! He said he felt sofa was so uncomfortable for TV watching that before they had their ottoman, he and his wife were sitting on the floor all the time, back against the sofa, instead of sitting on it.

Fathered by an Italian designer who received most of his artistic and craft training in Detroit, Michigan, the Bertoia Chair was born in America and has grown up to be a worldwide phenomena. Harry Bertoia was born in Italy but he studied in America, working at a variety of artistic careers. He tried his hand successfully at jewelry making, sculpting and other arts before turning his attention to furniture. The Bertoia Diamond Chair is one of his most popular creations, and it can be found in homes and offices as well as art studios around the world. The diamond pattern of the chair back and seat were outside the norm at the time he designed the chair, and it continues to look new and fresh today.
