Space-Saving Living Room Furniture: Storage Ottoman

It is an unfortunate fact that not all living rooms are created equal. For some people, living room furniture is a search for quality pieces that will help to fill up a sizeable space so chairs, ottomans, end tables, sofas & loveseats will all be a part of the process. Others may have space and storage issues to overcome. In fact it is this second group that bears some further attention – especially if you are a member.

There is often delicate balance you must strike when picking out living room furniture when you need to utilize the space you have more effectively. When choosing different items you may want to look for those that serve more than one purpose. A storage ottoman is a great example of this. Certainly, the need accounts for other furniture including coffee tables that come with storage compartments or shelving. The goal is to offer extra space when you do not have it otherwise.

What can you do to make the most of your living room space with storage ottomans? Essentially, you will want to choose the right ottoman for the space you have. This may not be a simple task up front, but you can certainly increase the chances of success by take some time to do a little research up front. Also, it helps if you have some other considerations decided and out of the way too. For instance, what is the style of your living room furniture? What sort of compromises on an ottoman will you have to make in terms of size or design when you have a smaller living room?

Naturally, you might have to choose a storage ottoman based on the size of the chairs or sofas you have. Perhaps, you will choose one that large enough that it only comes with storage but also accommodates a tray. This allows your ottoman to serve as your coffee table so you can eliminate the piece of living room furniture. Of course, if you do not want to get rid of your table, you could always choose an ottoman that also serves as a bench for additional seating. Do not discount the usefulness of smaller models. If you choose a square ottoman, you could pick out a storage cube ottoman that offers at least a little additional space for stowing away things when you’re not using them.

A Good Living Room Furniture Accessory – Leather Ottoman

Once you have taken the step to buy living room furniture you may find that some pieces are far easier to choose than others. Of course, this may not account for your individual style or tastes. Choosing sofas & loveseats is one thing. Picking the ottomans may be another one, especially if you want to coordinate your overall design to include a leather ottoman. The question at this point may be whether one of the leather ottomans you have in mind is a really a good living room accessory.

You will probably agree that a good design is an important factor in choosing living room furniture. Each table, chair and ottoman will be just a part of the large picture (especially if you are replacing an entire set). You will discover quickly that the ottomans you choose may be entirely based on the sofas you have or whether your living room contains a sectional.

When you are attempting to coordinate a material like leather in all of your living room furniture, you may have trouble finding an entire set that matches. There is always a question of whether choosing one type of ottoman like a chair ottoman will be the best choice for your space. Another size or shape of ottoman may work better with the area you have available. This brings up question of styles again since you may have a leather furniture set that does not include the ottoman in a shape or style that you prefer.

There squares, rectangles, cubes, and even round ottomans that are also available in a variety of materials including leather. You should ask yourself some further questions when looking at the shape and construction of different pieces. Will that leather storage ottoman you picked out fit in the room with your coffee table? This is an excellent question. Again, you need good answers to such questions. It should be a top practical consideration when you think about buying living room furniture to get proper measurements.

Not only should you get the exact dimensions of the living room but you will need to get the measurements for every piece of furniture you plan to add to the space. If you already have some furniture and are just planning to include additional pieces, be that you have the available floor space. Yes, these are common sense considerations, but they go a long way to help you make the most of your living room design and your choices of appropriate furniture, including ottomans.

You really should know if a leather ottoman is the right accessory for your living room because you have taken the time to ensure that is the best choice among all of the other living room furniture you have considered and tested out. It really is about knowing what you want and getting a handle on the different products that are for sale.

Tips on Living Room Furniture - Coffee Table Purchases

For many people, the prospect of looking for new living room furniture can be looked upon with a bit of apprehension. After all, how do you find the right selection of pieces to fit your space? This is certainly true when you are looking for living room tables, especially coffee & end tables.

Considering the Other Furniture

You should not go out and buy any sort of living room tables without thinking about how an additional piece of furniture will affect the look or performance of the others. It’s important to base your purchases on how you think your coffee tables will look with your sofas, ottomans, and chairs. Are you sure the table you have in mind will fit in with the other pieces of furniture? If you are only replacing one coffee end table, you do not want it to clash with the other pieces.

While it is possible these days to find a coffee table set, most of you will be looking for individual tables that fit in the other all scheme of the room. If you have a lot of wood fixtures, you may choose a wooden table. Just remember to choose a similar wood color or one that compliments your existing features. The sort of living room furniture you have can determine a lot.

Other Practical Considerations

With all personal tastes aside, you should remember that like other living room furniture, the coffee table serves a function. Now, in some ways this has already been stated. You obviously want to have a table that fits in your room. If it doesn’t, you have an obstacle that can end up causing more problems than providing a convenient place to set your drinks. You want the table be just large enough so it can be situated about a foot or so away from any couch, chair, or other living room furniture you may have.

Is the table sturdy enough to withstand regular daily use? Not all living room furniture is created equal. It pays to take a little time to examine table that you’ve added to your short list of possibilities. This investment of time and attention could save you the future costs of replacing a piece when you could have chosen a durable piece of furniture that would have lasted years longer. It’s something to think about.

Finally, take your time and do not hurry into any purchases. Spend some time to do your homework. Sometimes comparing sellers and talking to your friends can bring you great findings and surprising savings.

Helpful Tips for Your Living Room Furniture Purchase

Not everyone realizes how having a good plan can help them find their living room furniture faster and easier than going into the search totally blind. They end up wasting more time searching for the wrong chairs or living room tables, rather than having a clear idea what sort of living room furniture they want – or whether the furniture they like will fit in the space. Here are some quick tips that can help you sort out the process easier and faster.

Keep a List When You Shop

When you have figured out what sort of furniture you’re in the market for, you can start making a list of the particular pieces you would like to have. Remember to be specific. This means including the sizes that will work, color preferences, and any other relevant details. When you start comparison-shopping, such a list will make the job so much easier. The moment you enter that furniture store, you may find it easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of choices. When confronted with ten different styles of living room tables, you had better have that list ready. When you’re looking at different fabric choices, you should have already asked yourself if you want to go with vinyl or leather. (After all, if you are dining at all in your living room, the choice of fabric or upholstery can be a big deal.)

Choose Lasting Furniture

When you’re making such a larger purchase such as a sofa set, you should make choices that will last you for a long time. Why pick something based on a trend of fleeting preference that you will hate in a year? This factors into the previous tip since the problems arise from not having a good picture of your tastes or not striving for a balance overall picture of your living room pieces. If you take the time to shop around for some discount accessories such as vases or wall décor, you can keep the furniture looking fresh even when other considerations of style evolve with the times. Above all, keep your furniture colors easy to work with so you can change out these elements and get a new look.

Test the Stability of Your Furniture

When you find something, whether it’s a sofa or a hardback chair, you need to put it through some physical tests for durability. Look at each piece of living room furniture with a careful eye to the construction quality. List on it, move around on it, and basically do everything you would normally do over the normal course of a day’s use. Look at the buttons, seams, and check for the springs too while you’re at it. Again, it will pay to be thorough.

In general, like the way you should do everything else, making a planning and sticking to your plan will make your furniture purchase organized, in terms of lead time, budget and everything else. No need to be frustrated any more, start your planner today!

Ottomans, The True Story

Buying ottomans as part of the living room furniture set is a simple matter to some people, while to others it has a special meaning, historically speaking, anyway.

The ottoman got its name from The Ottoman Empire and has become an extremely popular and functional part of the American family room and living room for many, many generations.

Standard ottomans, leather ottomans, storage ottomans, the ottoman table, the coffee table ottoman and the bench ottoman all came from the same source: The Ottoman Empire. This magnificent period of Muslim Turks ruled millions of subjects on three continents from 1299 until 1922, when the loss of World War One dissolved their Empire and greatly diminished their power and influence, with the singular exception of the ottomans, the footrest, not the Empire.

The spread of Islam across Part of Southern and Eastern Europe and the taking of Constantinople in 1453 actually spread the Turks’ culture and comfortable furniture also.

The ottoman footrests, (brown ottoman is still the most popular color), demonstrated a secret of the mighty Ottoman Turks to the Western military: the Turks simply knew how to relax between battles. And they had a superior economic usage of space. The storage ottoman actually served two purposes, as a footrest, of course, and also by removing the top or lid of the ottoman, one could use the empty space inside for storage. We certainly do not know what the Turks stored inside their ottomans but nowadays blankets are the most commonly stored items in the American ottoman. Apparently, we know how to relax too. More ottomans are sold in America than anywhere else in the world.

Almost everyone remembers an ottoman from his or her youth. It could have been their grandparents’ ottoman, there parents’ or their uncles’ and aunts’ or their next door neighbors’ ottoman. We have all seen them and used them at some point in our lives.

As kids, ottomans seemed like the perfect piece of furniture. It was just our size and we could play on it, do our homework on it, use it as a table for eating a snack or lunch or, if we were small enough, even hide in it. Ottomans, the furniture, exude total versatility and function in their simple, yet universally appealing design. Is it any wonder that the Ottoman Turks could have such an immense Empire? They probably could not have done it without the ottoman.

Earliest and Modern Ottomans

The ottoman furniture consists of an upholstered bench or seat with padding. In earlier times its use was limited in the form of stools or footstools only. But with time, its use has diversified from simple footrests to delicate coffee tables. A piece of ottoman furniture never consists of any arm or backrest and this is what that makes it distinctive from other furniture.

It is believed that the origin of word “Ottomans” and the furniture it depicts came into existence in Egypt, which came to Europe in the 19th century via France. In French the ottomans word denotes fabric and the standard ottomans furniture too is use to be covered with fabric in order to hide its base. The first in line of ottomans furniture was the footstool that was designed in Egypt under Ottoman Empire in 18th century.

Though, the ottoman word was taken as such in English too, many other synonyms for the ottomans furniture were also evolved. For example: hassocks, tuffets, footstools and pouffes. But one should not misunderstand the ottoman footstools with an ordinary stool that comes with standard living room furniture. The distinctive feature of the ottoman footstool is its padding and fabric cover that completely hides the base.

Most of the ottoman furniture can be used as the storage ottomans thanks to their box-like structure. Some of the larger ottomans are commonly used for storing the spare blankets. The smaller ottomans are constructed with a cushioned top to make them comfortable as a footrest or a low seat.

Whether it was an ottoman table or simply an ottoman footrest there were no legs in the earliest ottomans and hence they used to be in direct contact with the floor. The earliest ottomans were primarily used by the Ottoman emperors and their subordinates and so the expensive carpets were laid beneath the ottomans. But in the modern world there are few people who can afford such a luxury and hence with time the ottomans were provided with short and sturdy legs. The lid of the earliest ottomans was free to be removed completely from its base, but now most of the ottomans are provided with hinged lids.

With the passing of time people’s taste about the fashion changed and as such the designs of ottoman furniture too. Now, several different types of ottomans with different shapes, sizes, colors and designs are being manufactured, like brown ottoman, bench ottoman, leather ottomans, coffee table ottoman and many others.

Living Room Furniture : How to Find The Right Leather Ottoman

What are some things you might want to consider when choosing an ottoman in the first place? What are your reasons for settling on a leather one? Are you motivated by the other living room furniture you’ve already purchased? Again, you should first ascertain what your motivations are for buying that leather bench ottoman you saw in the store. It could be that you are striving to provide good counterparts to those living room tables and that sofa you picked up. There’s nothing wrong with striving for a harmonious living room design.

Very often, when you are considering an ottoman, you have already got the center pieces of the room, such as a sectional sofa or a sofa set. At this moment, whenever you are adding an extra piece, you should take into consideration the overall style and design. For example, you must make sure the new addition will fit in the space. If you want the ottoman to match your sofa, the structure of the sofa will directly affect the shape of your ottoman.

Now, there has already been some mention of styles in terms of the shape, but other stylistic considerations may come into depending on your situation. For those who do not have as much space in their living rooms or that lack additional space for other purpose, some styles of ottomans offer a handy solution. More often now, you can buy a storage ottoman that comes with a removable top that reveals either a good storage compartment or an option for transforming the ottoman into one of the living room tables.

No one would deny that a big part of choosing leather living room furniture is about knowing what shade or color of leather to choose. While it is possible to get leather in a variety of colors, black and brown remain the most popular colors among consumers. It is equally important when trying to match your leather ottoman to a separate set of furniture. Then again, you may not have so much trouble with this since you can find sets that include ottomans as well.

Your choice of color and materials may be more motivated by other factors. It could be that you plan the living room to be a place where everyone can cut loose and have fun. Additionally, if you have children leather may be a better choice since it more durable than some fabrics and can be cleaned far easier. Thus, you may be less concerned when your child climbs all over your leather ottoman than you would with some other type of living room furniture.

To make your shopping process a little easier, you can carry a small swatch of your existing furniture pieces around with you. You memory may fail you especially when there is subtle differences between tones.

Ottomans For Every Taste

One of the ever-present difficulties of choosing something is coming with a type that fits your individual tastes. As with cars, shoes, and clothing so it is with living room furniture. Sofa, loveseats, coffee tables, and ottomans are all available in different styles so you should be sure to find something to your tastes. At this time, let’s focus on the ottoman. This piece of furniture is not always among the choices made by those who are interested in creating a more custom look to their living space.

In fact, they may be an afterthought or something you add to your existing living room design later. Standard ottomans are just cushioned frames with legs that are used to prop up the feet while sitting in a chair or on the sofa. The ottomans you can find in any furniture store are also great for auxiliary seating when you need to accommodate a larger group of people. A bench ottoman comes to mind here.

Perhaps, it is the versatility that makes the ottoman an excellent choice, particularly when you consider the various options. You can find an ottoman for every taste and perceived need. If you need extra storage space in the living room, then you could choose storage ottomans so you will be able to put away those magazines, extra blankets, or pillows, that do not need to be out all the time, cluttering up the space.

If you need extra space to for drinks or food when entertaining, a coffee table ottoman may be a great choice. With these types, the tops of the ottomans come off and can be flipped over to reveal a flat, tabletop surface. Of course, if you already have normal ottoman, you can buy an ottoman table, which is basically a tray designed especially for use with this piece of furniture.

Now, with all of this functionality and any practical concerns address, your tastes may be more properly sated by the appearance or types of materials that are used to make your ottoman of choice. Colors may vary depending widely. If you have a brown ottoman then you’ll be looking for furniture that compliments the particular shade and texture. This is definitely the case when you have certain fabrics or upholstery.

Leather ottomans, on the other hand, skate the line between taste and functionality since they are not only very attractive and sophisticated in appearance but are also much easier to clean than standard fabrics. (It’s great if you have children who have a tendency to spill things.)

If you examine the different retailers and other outlets offering ottomans, you will easily see how much is available. There is truly an ottoman for every taste.

Why choose Ottomans

When looking for living room furniture, ottomans many times come to mind as an after thought or almost an after-market purchase. An ottoman can come with an armchair or glider and is often designed as an accessory or part of a set together with the armchair.

There are several types of ottomans: standard ottomans, storage ottomans, ottoman tables, coffee table ottoman and bench ottoman.

The ottomans were the favorite piece of furniture named after the Ottoman Empire, which lasted from 1299 until 1922. The Ottoman Empire spanned three continents, Western Asia, Eastern and Southeastern Europe and North Africa. World War One ended Ottoman rule in these parts of the world, but not the spread of its cherished footstool. Even after the empire lost its power, the name stuck to this very versatile and useful footrest and its popularity spread like wild fire, especially in America. In one sense, the ottomans have reconquered a large share of the world and arguably, more people know the name ottoman now than they did when the real Ottomans were in control.

Standard ottomans are basically footrests for an armchair or easy chair. That’s all they are made to do. When some one says, “Put your feet up and take a load off,” they are really telling you to sit down in a comfortable chair, relax and reat your feet on the ottoman that’s in front of the chair.

Storage ottomans are just that: they are built for storage. The padded top is usually hinged and can open up to reveal an open space in heart of the ottoman in which people generally store blankets for use with the easy chair and ottoman. Many people use ottomans as tables and if they have a flat, level surface, so much the better. They can be used as coffee tables or benches.

Ottomans can be any color, brown ottoman is very popular in the United States, and they can be covered in any material, leather ottomans are the most popular types of ottomans in the world. Ottomans are so useful that some people actually build their furniture suites around them. Some ottomans have been in families for generations and instead of getting new ones, the family hand me down is simply re-done so another generation can feel the pleasure of one of the world’s most popular and beloved piece of furniture.
